Positive results after a year of door-to-door collection in the town centre of Benitatxell: 300 tonnes less general waste and 90% more organic waste

  • This waste collection system has proven to be a guarantee of success in reducing waste and promoting waste separation and recycling.

The statistics are clear. The door-to-door waste collection system is a guaranteed success in reducing waste and promoting separation and recycling. Just one year after the implementation of this system in the town centre —it was launched last February 10th, 2025— and after almost three years of operation in Les Fonts, Los Molinos and Racó de Nadal, the results are very positive.

The annual technical report produced by the Waste Department of the municipal public company Poble Net meticulously records, month by month, day by day, the kilos of waste generated in the municipality, classified by type: organic, paper and cardboard, light packaging, glass and other waste.

The 2025 analysis reveals striking statistics compared to the previous year. One of the most notable is the reduction of 300 tonnes in the “other waste” fraction, i.e. all domestic waste that remains after separating paper and cardboard, glass, plastic and packaging, and organic matter, and which cannot be recycled and does not have a specific container for selective collection. This means that Benitatxell has gone from generating 76% of residual waste to reducing it to 68%.

Logically, this is reflected in an increase of around 165 tonnes in the selective fractions. By type, organic waste stands out, increasing from 77 to 145 tonnes compared to the previous year, which represents a 90% increase. Paper and cardboard went from 192 to 230 tonnes (19%) and light packaging from 171 to 230 tonnes (34%).

A change of model

Since 2021, the Council, in collaboration with Poble Net, has been restructuring the waste collection service. In addition to the introduction of “Door-to-Door” collection, changes have been made in other areas of the municipality, with the installation of container points for all types of waste separation. The next step will be the installation of organic waste bins in certain areas. Users who wish to do so can join by obtaining an access code.

These measures involve reducing costs and increasing incomes, which makes it possible to stabilise waste rates and avoid having to raise taxes on residents. In fact, according to an article by La Marina Plaza that compiles the rates of all the municipalities in La Marina Alta, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell ranks in the top 10 of the lowest rates in the region, with the cheapest being 62 euros and the most expensive 276.28 euros.

In this positive assessment, the Councillor of Waste Management, Javi Cabrera, highlighted the ‘enormous effort and collaboration’ of the public over the last year. ‘We are very grateful to the people of the town for being understanding about the changes and for joining in and getting involved with the new systems’. He also praised the role of the waste collection operators, who ‘are doing an excellent job’.
