- From March 2nd to 9th, the Council, in collaboration with the Women’s Association, the European Union of Women Marina Alta, Clásicas y Modernas, Club Multiesport and the Base Football School, has programmed a number of activities.
March is always at El Poble Nou de Benitatxell the month of women’s vindication. The Councillorship of Equality, in collaboration with the Associació de Dones, the European Union of Women Marina Alta, the Club Multiesport and the Municipal School of Base Football, has prepared numerous activities for all tastes and ages that will start on March 2nd and will last until the 9th.
This year, International Women’s Day at El Poble Nou will focus on ‘paying a sincere tribute to all working women, with special recognition to the pioneers of the municipality, who with their effort and courage paved the way for today’s generations’, explained the councillor of Equality, Isa Garrido. This marks the start of the project ‘Memoria Viva. Honouring the working women of the past and present’, which is expected to be continued in order to continue retrieving the testimonies of the women of El Poble Nou.
As the backbone of the week, the documentary ‘Memoria Viva’ (Living Memory) has been prepared, which tells the story of seven women from El Poble Nou who, as Garrido pointed out, ‘at a time when women were relegated to the housework and the priests, broke down barriers and made their own way in the world of work outside the home. They are all elderly women with fascinating stories to tell and from whom we have much to learn’. The audiovisual will be presented next Saturday March 8th, at 7.30 p.m. at the Social Centre.
That same evening, at 7pm, the photographer Jessica Hooghiemstra will present her exhibition ‘The Women of Benitatxell’, which will be on display at the Social Centre throughout the whole week, starting on Monday 3rd in the afternoon. In the morning, the youngest ones will also be able to enjoy the storytelling with a gender perspective ‘Rosa Caramel’, which will take place at the Municipal Library at 11.00am.
Furthermore, the programme, which will begin next Sunday 2nd, will include events designed for all ages. Thus, that day in the afternoon, the students of the municipal sports schools of the Club Multiesport Benitatxell will offer a dance demonstration in the tent of the Pesqueres square.
The week will start on Monday 3rd with the inauguration of the photographic exhibition ‘The Women of Benitatxell’ and the screening of short films for equality with a talk by Marina Gilabert, from the association Clásicas y Modernas. Afterwards, the Associació de Dones (Women’s Association) will offer sweets and mistela.
It will continue on Tuesday 4th with a walk and snack at l’Abiar washing place, where the archaeologist in charge, Humberto García, will give an explanation of the recovery works of the washing place; and on Wednesday 5th with the cineforum of the film ‘La abuela y el forastero’ with its director, Sergi Miralles, and Arminda García, with sweets and mistela in charge of the Associació de Dones (Women’s Association).
On Thursday 6th there will be two evening events: at the Social Centre, the Associació de Dones (Women’s Association) will offer a snack of chocolate with ‘mona’ and games, and will hold its ordinary general assembly. On the municipal football field, the girls of the women’s football team of the Municipal School of Base Football of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell will host a friendly match with the women’s team of U.D. Benissa. They will also have the special presence of Gema Pastor, goalkeeper of the València C.F. Femenino first team.
To round off the weekend and put the icing on the cake of this complete programme, on Friday 7th, organised by the European Union of Women Marina Alta, there will be a demonstration and dance exercises with Pam Small and the presentation of the book ‘No son heroínas’ by its author, Pilar Brotons. While on Sunday 9th the week will close with the traditional lunch of the Associació de Dones (Women’s Association) and the concert of female voices of the Cor de La Rectoria.
