Benitatxell takes a big step forward in the fight against weeds and the maintenance of paths and green areas

  • Through Poble Net, a reinforcement brigade of two operators has been implemented, who will be dedicated exclusively to cleaning and maintenance of Cumbre del Sol and other residential areas
  • This reinforcement is part of a restructuring process in the municipal services company, which has divided its workers into teams assigned to specific areas and tasks for greater efficiency

The Council of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell wants to tackle once and for all the problem of overgrown weeds in streets, paths, ravines and green areas in order to present an image of a well-kept and clean town. To this end, through its municipal public company Poble Net S.L., it has set up a reinforcement brigade of two operators who will be exclusively dedicated to cleaning and maintenance of Cumbre del Sol and other mountain residential areas.

Throughout the year, two workers will be dedicated to the conservation and maintenance of landscaping and green areas; the cleaning and maintenance of roads, paths and highways; and the cleaning and maintenance of palm trees. To this end, a cyclical itinerary has been drawn up that will cover both Cumbre del Sol and the southern part of the municipality, which includes Golden Valley, Calistros and Pueblo Alcassar.

This new service was launched on October 15th, and the technical report summarising the first month and a half already shows the first signs of progress. Works have begun on Cumbre de Sol, where around thirty dry pine trees have already been chopped down, 30 metres of hedges have been pruned, and 18 km of roads and green areas in Dalias, Lirios, Magnolias, Jazmines, the roundabout at the sailboat to Moraig roundabout (Lirios shopping centre), the roundabout at Cala Llebeig to Llebeig wastewater treatment plant, the hill from Lady Elizabeth School to Pueblo Panorama as well as the green area, and the roundabout and traffic island next to El Puig building and Lady Elizabeth School.

This reinforcement will help to supplement the work of municipal staff who, due to the considerable length of rural roads and green areas in town, were overwhelmed. This will allow Poble Net workers to focus their efforts on other areas, achieving better performance and results.

The hiring of this new brigade, budgeted at €91,000 per year, is part of a restructuring process at Poble Net, which has divided its operators into teams limited by areas and tasks for greater efficiency. Thus, in addition to the new brigade, a second team will be assigned to the residential areas and scattered settlements in the northern part of the municipality (Les Fonts, Los Molinos, Racó de Nadal, l’Abiar, Benicambra and Camí de la Torreta) and another to the town centre and Barranc Roig (La Joya, Vista Montaña, Terra Moraira and Villotel).

‘We have never before allocated so many resources to the maintenance of weeds and green areas. It has been a personal ambition and a priority project for several years, and finally this restructuring in Poble Net has made it possible,’ said the mayor, Miguel Ángel García. ‘With this investment, we are taking a giant step forward in offering a better service to the public and keeping our town clean and well maintained‘.

Removal of dead pine trees

In addition to this major blow dealt by the Council to weeds, there will be a major initiative in 2026 to remove dead pine trees which, following the severe drought in 2024, pose a serious risk of forest fires. Thus, in addition to the subsidies from the Regional Government (the seven operators of the Emerge brigade who have already joined) and the Diputación that are expected to be obtained, the government team (Més Benitatxell) has allocated 45,000 euros in the municipal budget for this end.

All these actions are intended not only to prevent wildfires, but also to ensure visibility and accessibility on roads and paths, guarantee health and safety, and present a well-kept and clean image of the municipality.
