Benitatxell is setting up sensors in the rainwater network to help stop overflows during heavy rain

  • This system will help make preventive decisions to keep locals and pedestrians safe in emergencies

El Poble Nou de Benitatxell’s Council, through the public municipal company Poble Net S.L., has set up two flow and level sensors at two specific points in the municipal rainwater network, in the lower parts of Mar and Pou streets, to analyse how the rainwater drainage system in the town centre works.

The equipment, which provides information on flow rates and water levels in the collector, activates a modern alarm system in the event that pre-set thresholds are exceeded, thus warning of possible overflows. This system will enable preventive decisions to be taken for the safety of neighbours and pedestrians in emergencies.

It is expected that by 2026, the number of these sensors will be increased at more control points, both in the town centre and in the rest of the municipality, not only to analyse the behaviour of the rainwater network but also that of the wastewater network, adding in this case an environmental and health benefit, given the nature of wastewater discharges.

The actions are included in the Sewerage Master Plan drawn up in 2024 and in the Stormwater Master Plan, which was completed in 2025. They are also linked to the installation of three weather stations, which will enable the relationship between rainfall and the behaviour of the wastewater and stormwater networks to be determined accurately.
