Schoolchildren and building works coexist at Santa Maria Magdalena school of Benitatxell, which starts an atypical school year.

  • The entrance of the youngest children has been completely normal, without crowds and in an orderly manner

This Monday the school year 2024-2025 started at CEIP Santa María Magdalena of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell with some changes in the accesses due to the refurbishment works of the centre. Despite this, the entrance of the youngest children has been completely normal, without crowds and in an orderly manner.

Most mothers, fathers and relatives accompanied the children on foot, and others made use of the new car parking lot on Mestral street or the quick unloading area ‘Kiss and goodbye’, which is intended to allow families to leave the children quickly and kiss them goodbye before entering the school.

The Local Police have reinforced their forces to encourage correct circulation and solve any doubts, offering information in an educational way about the new accesses, the available car parking lots and the functioning of the ‘Kiss and Goodbye’ area, as there were still people who were unaware of its correct functioning.

The pupils of 6th Grade of Primary School have moved with their tutors from the school to the Adult Education School, at Les Pesqueres square, where their classrooms have been relocated. This section will be closed to traffic for safety reasons, as it will be used as a playground and recreational area. Access to the entrances of garages will not be allowed on this stretch of road during playground time.

The councillor of Education and Urban Planning, Jorge Pascual, has highlighted the cooperation of families, who have contributed to the start of the school year running smoothly in spite of the changes.

The Pla Edificant refurbishment

The refurbishment and extension of the school, which began last July, is progressing well. The works have been coordinated with the Council, the management team and the School Council so that they interfere as little as possible, avoiding the access of heavy vehicles at school start and finish times.

The works were allocated to the company BECSA S.A. for 2,277,578.78 euros (VAT included). It includes the extension of the main building, which will house the new kindergarten classroom, four more primary classrooms, a multipurpose room, and support, music and computer classrooms. Also, the refurbishment of a kindergarten classroom to become a library, the enlargement of the existing school plot, the relocation of the sports field and the execution of a series of urbanisation works.

The refurbishment of the only school in the municipality is a long awaited project by the entire educational community. The works will make the removal of prefabricated classrooms possible and modernise a school built in 1932 which, although it has undergone reforms and extensions, has become too small and needs new classrooms adapted to current teaching methods.
