Benitatxell becomes the home of Valencian women’s football for a day

  • The municipal football field La Font hosted on Thursday a training session of the FFCV Valencian Valenta Girls’ Team.

Last Thursday, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell became the home of Valencian girls’ football for a day. La Font municipal football field hosted a technical training session with a friendly match of the Valencian Valenta Girls’ Team.

32 players from clubs in the province of Alicante were called to the field, including Marta Mateu and Alexia Courte, local players from the Municipal School of Football Base of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell.

The friendly match lasted 30 minutes each half. The event was attended by various coaches from the lower categories, the heads of the national team recruitment department and representatives of the Valencian national teams. The mayor, Miguel Ángel García, the councillor of Sports, Javi Cabrera, and the coordination of the municipal school, led by Celso Alcázar, were also present.

El Poble Nou de Benitatxell is one of the municipalities of La Marina Alta, along with Dénia and Benissa, which has made a strong commitment to women’s football. The first girls’ team was created in the 2022-2023 season following the growing demand from girls playing in mixed categories, who began to get mobilised so that this team could be set up.

At the beginning, there was a team for girls (12 and 13 years old) with 12 players, and now the club has a total of 43 players in two girls’ 11-a-side football teams, one in the Infantil category and the other in the Cadete category. Both play in the Valenta league of the FFCV (Football Federation of the Valencian Community).

‘As a small municipality, we are tremendously proud to have been able to form this great quarry of girls and young women. At the time, we made a strong commitment to women’s football and today we can say that it was a great decision, as today we have fantastic players who can enjoy their great passion for football,’ said the mayor, Miguel Ángel García.

For his part, the Councillor of Sports, Javi Cabrera, stressed that ‘the intention is to continue supporting women’s football’, as ‘it is a great fortune to have been able to create two great teams, and we are going to make the most of the great potential that is being created by the Football Base club’.
