Drastic measures for emergency situations. The plenary session of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell Council held urgently on Tuesday unanimously approved the contracting process for the purchase of water bottles to supply drinking water to the whole neighbourhood after the tap water was declared unfit for human consumption.
The distribution of bottles will begin on Friday August 16th, from 10am to 6pm, at the Market car parking lot. On that day, a total of 3,840 bottles will be supplied until stocks last to subscribers in the municipality, who will have to provide their ID card and home address. The same process, also with 3,840 bottles, will be carried out on Tuesday August 20th at the same location from 9am to 6pm.
This is the first of the measures taken by the Council, although not the only one, as it is negotiating with Hidraqua the installation of various water tanks in different towns and areas of the municipality to make it more accessible to the public.
The approval of these emergency actions has been possible thanks to the previous agreements reached unanimously this Tuesday by the Board of the Teulada – El Poble Nou de Benitatxell Water Consortium to delegate powers to the councils and initially allocate 100,000 euros (67.4% to Teulada Moraira and 32.6% to El Poble Nou de Benitatxell) so that each municipality can make the contracts it may consider appropriate to supply the public with drinking water. Likewise, the consortium has also approved to urge Hidraqua, the company holding the concession, to take the appropriate measures to mitigate the current situation of the domestic drinking water service, as reflected in the contract.
After accepting, in the first instance, the delegation made by the Board of the Teulada – El Poble Nou de Benitatxell Water Consortium, Benitatxell’s plenary session also approved the declaration of the emergency situation. It then made an urgent request for the intervention of Generalitat Valenciana and Alicante Provincial Council to carry out the necessary actions to solve the problem, specifically the immediate implementation of the pipeline project to connect Xàbia and the Teulada – El Poble Nou de Benitatxell Water Consortium via Camí Vell de Teulada.
This project, which has been demanded for many years, was drafted by the public company Proaguas in June 2021 and approved by Marina Alta Water Consortium in March 2024. However, it lacks the necessary funding to carry it out, which is why the mayor, Miguel Ángel García, has insisted on the importance of providing the necessary budget appropriation.
García also stressed the importance of this project for “making the region”, as it would not only connect Xàbia with Benitatxell and Teulada, but would also open the doors to connect the supply to other towns in the interior of La Marina Alta.
